Everything under heaven and above hell goes through evolution. Our poltical system has gone throught the same. Once the political landscape appeared to be "for the people".......now wit for the pocket book.
Listen it is what it is and i have no hard feelings about it but dont piss on me and tell me its raining. politics has evolved into big business for big business exclusive groups. Politics allow someone to have access to money resources and opportunity that otherwise is not avaliable to the lay man.
Why not just be honest and allow who wants to play the game to play the game?
Boy if one more US mascott....i mean president stands up and promises to make something happen that he cant make happen per social studies 101........

This is a wonderful, well-written article. I am about to begin writing about bullying on my own blog. My son (age 10) had quite a bit of trouble with it last year, and has come to the conclusion that the only person he can really count on in life (besides his family) is himself, and that the people one thinks are one's friends may change the next day, so it is important to always keep one's guard up.

I have gone from being sad to angry to furious to sad again. And while things are much better now - almost a non-issue, I am left with questions about civility (and write about them in my own blog "Lessons From Teachers and Twits" at http://rasjacobson.wordpress.com.

I am starting to realize - after speaking to several parent who expressed PRIDE that their children were considered the "mean kids" on the playground - that some parents would prefer to have their kids be the bullies than risk the possibility of them being victims. It's like there is no middle place: you are weak or strong, a cool kid or a loser.

I think it is much easier to teach your kids to be tough than it is to teach the nuances. And let's face it, parents may helicopter about these days, but maybe if they hovered less they might have the energy to parent more.

Excellent post. It does seem like our culture is getting coarse.

As a teacher, I've got a unique opportunity to work with kids. Once or twice a week, I pick a virtue, and bring it up as the topic for a 5 minute discussion. NOT lecture... no one likes being preached to. It's my hope that the pebbles I throw into the lake of their mind will create ripples - and those ripples will splash on to the shore of their conscious thoughts and behaviors.

What an excellent article and very well put. There is no place in a civil society for bullying behavior. The only reason it continues is due to the societal belief that it's OK for "kids to be kids" and deal with bullying. That is just not true and we should stop perpetuating that idea and start to retrain our children so they grow up to be better adults. I share my own stories of bullying and many of the concepts that you shared above on my site http://www.bullyinglte.wordpress.com

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and well put together concepts.
